wireless N vs wireless G

My new macbook has wireless-N built in, and I need to add a router to enable wifi at my house. The wireless-N routers run roughly 2x price over the wireless-G, will I notice a big improvement buying the N router?

Check to see if it really is 802.11n. Many companies came out with what they thought the standard would be only to have the standard change. Now there is a big fight in the IEEE to get those deployed 'n' devices accepted as a new standard in 802.11

Probably not, unless you have FiOS service at the house, or you're operating a video server delivering video to your Macbook. For standard DSL/Cable, you will see little or no difference between N and G.

Get the Apple Airport Extreme. It's gotten pretty good reviews.

The N is there for sharing media within the home network. You can send video wirelessly between computers and to the Apple TV.

The Belkin pre-N (final now?) router has also gotten great reviews to the point of a cult following.

I guess the pre-N couldn't be upgraded.

I'd have to Google to see how the experiences have been with those and the Macbook N WiFi.

what bill said. except you will see a noticeable difference in coverage area. The N is supposed to have 10x the distance as the G cards.

Not if all you're doing is using the Internet.

The reason it's there is so you can stream media to your AppleTV when you decide to get one. Resistance is futile.

If you're planning on sharing files between machines through WiFi or doing any media streaming, get the N. If you'll use WiFi solely for Internet surfing, there's not much point except for a small future-proofing margin.
