Could get a whole lot more dangerous. imagine the size of TFR's if thousands of artillery shells rained down from an FOB somewhere a few miles away. Even if it just fire retardant, i wouldnt want to be a bug smasher hit by one of those.

Plus if they let the arty guys do it, occasionally someones house, cow, etc a few yards...or miles away will take a round. Been there.....dodged that 105 round that landed about 2 clicks short.

Umm, they want to fire artillery AND have air tankers at the same time? That sounds like a fabulous idea....

One would think air tanker pilots might have a bit of an objection to that.

Been doing it for years. The trick to routing helos under the max ord was to not tell the helos they were being routed under the artillery....

Kidding aside, firefighting deconfliction geometry would likely be simpler than most multiple asset close air support packages. (Says the former ANGLICO guy.)

When flying out west this time o year best check TFRs by the minute. Tis the time of year

This is Major Manchek. There's been a fire.
:)

Better order up a directive 7-12.

but what if the rounds had ADSB out? Then the pilots could avoid them.

Or just go to drones for fire suppression, then you dont care if one gets an arty round every once in a while.

I flew from north county San Diego (CRQ) to Tehachapi a few weeks ago and did exactly that. Wound up flying over the western edge of what had been the Sand fire. Saw the huge stripes of retardant along a ridge. Pretty eerie.

Yup, there are lots of pink ridgetops in the hills northeast of Napa now.

The same techniques that have aerial spotters coordinating with air tankers are how our military coordinates air and surface fires.

More distressing to me is the idea that this would be a cost effective use of our artillery Marines and Soldiers... Who already get precious little opportunity to train as they need to...
