Far more times that I care to think, something wierd has been happening. For example I came back from walking the dog this morning and started to check email. Sat down at the XP box and clicked on the PuTTy icon. It went transparent and nothing happened. In fact, no matter what icon I click on, it goes transparent and nothing happens. Reboot (actually, just log off use and log back in - no need to reboot) makes things work again.

But, this is not telling e the problem nor solving the problem. Anyone got any ideas? One other data point - usually observed in the morning after the system has been idle all night....

brought to you on my trusty Mac....

Did you recently install a new program or piece of hardware?
Also, if this just started recently, the easiest start to fix something with XP is to do a system restore to a point where it was working good. That can fix a wide array of problems with little pain.

Is there hard drive activity when you click them?

Does a new process start when you click them? (Open Task Manager and watch to see if anything happens.)
