Flight bag or no, I seem to carry quite a bit of that around.

Yeah and somehow I get a lot of little German Shorthaired Pointer hairs in my plane and he's never been in it!

My bag is usually full of:

Current sectionals
Current AFD
Many many many Expired Sectionals
about 6 expired AFDs
Dog biscuits, mostly crushed
Plotter and E6B
Fuel Tester
edit: I forgot I carry flashlights
I need to add some useful stuff. I just don't know what.

I got in the habit of writing NOT FOR NAV on any expired chart/AFD type stuff in my first flight school where it was common practice -don't know if it's really neccessary though.

There's more, but from memory without digging into the bag:

Fuel pipettes & tester
Headsets, 2 to 4
Charts/AFDs both VFR & IFR
Folding lap desk with retaining strap
Foggles
Flashlights & various spare batteries
Waterproof flares
Lighters
2 inflateable life jackets
Insect repellant
Water & food
Hand held NAVCOM with adapters
PTT switch and headset terminal box
GPS
Cell phone
Small waterproof tarp
Knife
Small vise grips
Lighters
Firearm/s
Fire extinguisher
A couple old flying magazines

Plus often throw into back seat or cargo bay; full goretex shells, warm clothes, sleeping bag/s, inflateable foam mattress/s, and tent appropriate to terrain under the route of flight and the season.

  • Checklists (3 planes)
  • Keys (3 planes + the old Plymouth)
  • 2 pens, 2 pencils, fine line sharpie
  • 4 flashlights (2 red, one red/white, one white)
  • Sunglasses
  • Current AF/D for area of flight
  • Notebook
  • E6B
  • Plotter
  • IFR flight file loaded w/most likely to be used plates
  • Mechanical stopwatch
  • Airport badge and prox card
  • Spare batteries (AA and AAA)
  • Reading glasses and leash
  • Pocket survival kit
  • Sturdy folding survival knife
  • Power bars (pick the most hideous flavor so you're not tempted to eat unless you NEED them)
  • Kneeboard
  • Jeppshades
  • Handheld GPS + POH and yoke mounts/power cord
  • Handheld navcom + POH and headset adapter
  • Headset
  • Fuel tester
  • Bound govt plates for area of flight
  • Manilla folder cut to fit around glareshield in the front left portion of the windshield. Makes a great cheater blocker for flying practice simulated and approaches.
  • In seperate bag, current Aircharts IFR and VFR atlas.

To keep the list short:
-Charts (Sectionals, Terminals, Lo-enroute, approach plates)
-Batteries
-Mini-Mag light with LED bulb
-Batteries
-GPS
-Handheld Com
-Glo-sticks for night flight if batteries are dead.
-Lint
-Crumbs from granola bars

Actually the flight bag isn't used except on those 'serious' flights. IFR/Long X-countries/etc

Ok so I was wondering what kind of stuff do you keep in your flight bag(s)?

Right now I have my headset, logbook, sectional, logbook, medical/student certificate (in my logbook holder of course) and gum.

Charts, IAPs(Not necessarily in date, not necessarily by a decade), Headset, various food bars, Flashlights, several bright and dim glow sticks in red or orange, a Gerber multi tool, a Snap On 1/4" drive set with shallow and deeps, A long shank ratcheting screw driver with interchangeable tips, a variety of wrenches, Long Handle 3/8 drive with plug socket and lead wrench, vise grips, a roll of duct tape, marline twine, spool of safety wire and pliers. E6B, fuel sampler, there's various pills down there, probably things like Sudafed, Vitamins and Anti-Psychotics. Three old company IDs, some Bandaids, couple pads of note paper, several 3.5 floppies that I am utterly clueless about and have no way to read, a spare set of plugs to put on headsets, some condoms, some old advertising flyers from 15 years ago, OOooooo my old phone and address book, coool... Lots of dust & sand, and oh yeah, the remnants from when that bag of granola broke in there 10 years ago. A small solar calculator, a 6' folding rule, 2 soap markers, various ppencils and pens.
