Wanting to Change AME

Hello,

I have a "hopefully" easy question but I have been given some mixed information, I feel that the AOPA medical team was confused about my situation.

So, I was deferred due to being on an approved SSRI (Zoloft). The underlying "issue" was general anxiety, but that's not the point of this question. I have things sorted out, have my paperwork, and I'm about to schedule another Cog screen. (Yes, I've taken one before, but it was quite a long time ago).

Per the FAAs letter, I reached out to a HIMS specialist for a consult. Things went quite well, but as time passed, communication and contact with the HIMS Dr became difficult. I was able to forward most of my records to this HIMS Dr, but I have not had started a formal "exam/application" process with this HIMS doctor.

Recently, other life events have delayed me in finalizing my information and submitting the packet to the FAA. In the interim, I received my Denial letter which only stated they could not determine my eligibility as I never submitted the requested documents. At the bottom of the letter, my ACTUAL AME was the only name on the file, NOT the HIMS doctor.

After much consideration, I just thought about finding another HIMS doctor that was closer by and more available to look over my case and work with me. I called AOPA medical just to check everything, and they inform me that I have to fill out a transfer form and submit a request to the FAA? They also said that "Changing HIMS" doctors would set off a red flag, but I don't understand how? I wasn't assigned to this HIMS doctor, the HIMS doctor has never submitted any information regarding my case to the FAA. The doctor on my deferral and denial letter is just my normal AME. So, what's going on here? Am I "locked-in" with this HIMS doctor that isn't really available? If so, how? I haven't submitted any information to the FAA and per the FAA, they do not know that I met with this Dr for a consult. Is there a misunderstanding here?

Just to clarify:

- I'm not seeing any HIMS for any addiction or drug abuse
- I was deferred for being on Zoloft, with generalized anxiety
- I have been seeing the same BCP for 2 years, every 6 months with detailed documentation.
- The FAA has not received any medical information from me, or any other DR. They still have my AME at the bottom of all communication letters.

My true question is: Can I just change HIMS Doctors?

Yes, but nothing passes off a professional more than working with someone who doesn't follow through. Wait until you can dedicate the time and resources to get it done.

You can even change HIMS docs even after you have a HIMS authorization; the trick is that the sponsoring HIMS AME, has to certify he is not transferring a "problem".
But prior to the inital application, you can "just change".
