Sadly, Caddo Mills soaring operation is for sale. Posted by Dick Johnson on RAS:

Due to high fuel and insurance costs, declining flight scheduals,
and a year of bad weather, Southwest Soaring announced that it cannot
economically continue flight operations beyond 31 December. They plan
to permanently close their glider operations on that date, unless a
buyer or a new operator can be found.
The facility includes 2 modern concrete floored hangars on a
relatively large municipal airport. It is located about 30 miles east
of Dallas, TX. The airport has 2- 4,000 ft long concrete runways with
good clear approaches from all directions.
Southwest Soaring has operated continuously for 34 years, and has
always achieved an excellent safety record. A. C. Williams and his
wife Mary founded the soaring operation during the 1970's at Rockwall
Municipal Airport. Then during 1978 they moved 12 miles east to Caddo
Mills and built the fine modern facility that we have enjoyed for many
years. AC and Mary retired and sold the facility to the present owner,
Mr. Red Smith, sometime during the 1990's. Unfortunately, both AC and
Mary died in an automobile accident about 2 years ago.
We are now looking for someone who might be willing to lease or
purchase SW Soaring, and continue its year-round operation.

Well golly gee they convinced me it is a good business investment :no::no:

I think if he really wants to sell he needs to work on his technique a bit.

At this point if I were a perspective buyer I would not buy the business I would wait until after he is out of business and then pick up any unsold assets.

But bottom line is that stinks that he is going out of business.

I know Spike and his son love that operation, as do I and my girls... sad to see them go.

'Deed we do, T-Roy, and I was planning on starting Tommy up with some dual; there next spring.

Knowing full well that we don't know everything that went into the business losing money, it is always possible it could be more successful with different management. They always seemed plenty busy to me whenever I went out there. One can but hope, someone with a perfect blend of money, motivation and business acumen might come along.

Sounds like the place could make a small fortune for someone,
if they started out with a large one! Hope somebody wants it and keeps it fired up though...

Agreed, but one never knows... some people have money to waste on things they love. At least it's cheaper than owning an airline... :D

Tony: I'd advise you to put the word out on soaring-specific sites also, if you haven't done so already.

i copied it from the rec.aviation.soaring newsgroup. AFAIK its probably the most used soaring forum/group in the world.

Hmmm, do I keep the 180 put a towhook on it and move to Tejas?

go for it Ed. may want to upgrade the engine to a 235 though. Ive heard of the 235's towing, never a 180.
