On Saturday we flew to Aachen-Merzbrück to visit the beautiful Aachen Cathedral, the burial place of Charlemagne and the place where more than 30 German kings were crowned.

Nice trip and trip report!

I lived and went to college in Aachen back in the 90s, and flew out of Merzbrück a few times - both in airplanes and in gliders (though it was never my home base).

Cool!

Lived there ‘63-65, went to a German elementary school while there. Dad worked for Hughes Aircraft back then and was over there teaching the West Germans how to use their new air defense system. The six of us lived in a 1-bed apartment, Welkenrather Strasse 8 (now 78). Mom and Dad converted the dining area to be their Master BR and the four of us kids slept in bunk beds in the one bedroom. Kinda like being on a submarine. We all fit into a VW squareback, too.

That cathedral is one of my favorites. Very eclectic.

Thanks, I enjoyed that. My daughter goes to University in Aachen and I’ve never really studied the history of the city.
