Very few details - sadly the article spends more time talking about the bloody SWA hull rupture than about the UAL emergency landing.

Apparently happend about the same time that another SWA flight made an emergency landing at LAX due to possible electical fire.

Standby for massive media sensationalism!

"Complete instrument failure" - they ended up asking for a PAR approach!

A little disheartening when speaking about Airbus' vaunted redundancy.

Listen starting around 11:30 ish

It amazes me that when an airliner declares an emergency they don't necessarily go into, "All traffic hold. The airport is yours." They cleared some routine takeoffs and landings. I guess it makes sense that they know when the jet is close enough to make room for it.

They shouldn't treat the airliner differently than anybody else - and in my experience, they don't.

The extent of ATC's response depends mostly on the severity of the situation - which is exactly how it should be IMO.

On April 4, 2011, at about 7:25 a.m. CDT, an Airbus 320-232 (N409UA), serial number 462, with 109 passengers and crew aboard, operating as United Airlines flight 497, exited the left side of runway 19 at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). The aircraft had returned to the airport about 20 minutes after take-off due to electrical difficulties and smoke in the cockpit.
