That's good police work there, Lou.

A 5-year-old boy was detained as "security risk" because he had the same name of someone on the TSA "No-Fly" list. The TSA had to conduct a full search of their persons and belongings. When his mother went to pick him up and hug him and comfort him during the proceedings, she was told not to touch him because he was a national security risk. They also had to frisk her again to make sure the little Dillinger hadn't passed anything dangerous weapons or materials to his mother when she hugged him.

The first presidential candidate that says he/she'll will dissolve the DHS gets my vote.

If a candidate says they'll only do TSA I would be happy with that!!!

I hate to say it (No. I don't) but I said sarcastically, at the tiny passenger check-in counter at Meigs, no less, "Sure. The solution is a whole new government bureaucracy."

As I remember even GW was against it but he changed his mind. I wouldn't think the feds were looking at the jobs they could dish out as Chicago would, but maybe I was wrong. I cant imagine what the benefit was supposed to be other than getting the FBI and the other agencies like Customs to talk to each other. I knew it was a bad idea then. It turned out to be worse than we coudl imagine.

Once more. NO gate security agent on 9/11 failed to do the job he/she was given to do.

Here ya go. Get in line behind me.

"Name three programs you would eliminate? Answer: All these departments – Education, Energy, Homeland Security. The Republicans put in Homeland Security, a monstrous bureaucracy as inefficient as FEMA. But in order to cut taxes we have to change our philosophy about what government should do. We can’t cut taxes effectively so long as we still want to spend trillions of dollars on a massive welfare state, on policing the world, etc. Follow-up: You’d abolish the Department of Homeland Security in the middle of a war? Answer: We were already spending billions of dollars on homeland security prior to 9/11 and it didn’t prevent the attacks; inefficiency was the problem. Adding another huge, expensive, inefficient level of bureaucracy makes things worse."

"Mr. Speaker, HR 5710 [Homeland Security Information Sharing Act]gives the federal government new powers and increases federal expenditures, completely contradicting what members were told about the bill. Furthermore, these new power grabs are being rushed through Congress without giving members the ability to debate, or even properly study, this proposal. I must oppose this bill and urge my colleagues to do the same. "

A President once said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Now it seems like we’re supposed to be afraid, it’s patriotic in fact… color coded. And what are we supposed to be afraid of? Why, being afraid. That’s what terror means isn’t it?"- Randy Newman

The pols have realized that fear is a necessary componant of power. Without fear, they have no power. So there is a vested interest in being fear mongers because it works to their favor in maintaining power over the people.

If fear vanishes, they have no power.

You know a little over two years ago I wrote basically the same thing and was jumped on by a lot of Bush fans stating that I was making that all up. Amazing how that view is finally getting to be the majority view. Maybe we are not all doomed.

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.

That sure looks like one of the spam messages I've gotten where the viagra sales pitch is buried as a picture file. :hairraise:

Not spam. It is the introduction of V to Evie in the movie V For Vendetta. The picture is from the movie as well. Good movie if you have not seen it yet. It is from the same guys that did the Matrix. The original story was based on things that happened in England when Thatcher was taking over. But it was updated to take into account some of the newer fears that are being foisted upon us in regards to terrorism.

remember, remember, the 5th of November...

This is profiling! Now, if they could detain and prevent ALL 5 year olds (and younger) from flying, that might be a good thing!

It would be much less scary opening up your tray table or reaching into the seat back pocket that was so thoroughly cleaned by the airline personnel after the previous flight.

Hire stupid people and you get stupid results.

I remember a thread a while back praising TSA for hiring mindless automatons as being best suited for the job. I can guarantee that Israeli security screeners are NOT mindless automatons.

I had one of those touching TSA moments back when my youngest daughter was 2. She was pretty frightened in the security line, with the crowds, the machines, all the TSA folks. She was clinging to me, and wanted me to carry her through the scan machine. Now, maybe I'm stupid, but if there is something on either of us, it'll beep and they can wand the two of us individually. No, not good enough for the TSA. I had to put her down and have her walk through by herself. I went through first so she'd come to me, but she ran through on my heels. No beeps. Not good enough for Herr TSA. Had to disentangle her, put her back through, oops, I can't carry her back she has to go through on her own, and she has to go through again. Line is backing up, daughter is screaming, crying, hysterical. I somehow managed to get her through in the proper, TSA approved manner.

Good thing TSA was on the job!!!

You're lucky they didn't make you put her in a plastic tub and send her through the machine. They must have been having an off day.

My wife had a similar incident in 2002 or 2003. She flew from Charlotte to Detroit and back in the same day in order to accompany her 88-year old grandmother returning home to Detroit. She was and is very sharp, but she was frightened about the system and could not fly alone.

Of course, Gram had a one-way ticket, so guess what happened? She got flagged, and the TSA gems told her to stand with arms out, and raise one foot so they could scan the bottom of her shoe. AN 88-YEAR OLD WOMAN! She of course had trouble standing on two feet and could not stand on one foot, so my wife came over to help steady her. She was ORDERED to "stand down" by the TSA Nazis. Gram was almost crying, my wife was fuming, and TSA took about 10 minutes to go through the old lady's stuff.

I sent a letter to TSA, which surprisingly :dunno: was never answered. UFB.

She's 73% (or however much it is) water...he's lucky they didn't make him put her in a plastic bag.

4 year old Sam Adams is also marked as terrist for life.

My son, also five, is on that same list and it's a nightmare. Every time we fly with him, we can't use the computer terminals to check in and the attendant has to call some never named government agency to make sure he's not a terrorist. Some attendants joke it off but some are insanely serious about it. His seat always goes unassigned (even if it was assigned when the reservation is made) which always causes problems.

I've tried everything that anyone has suggested. There's a TSA form that you can fill out for this situation, which I did, but they won't tell you if they've removed your name. We got him a passport -- that didn't work. We've tried booking the tickets with his full name (including middle name), that didn't work. We tried booking the ticket under Master Samuel Adams, with still no luck.

Post of the month, right here...

I'm not sure it would phase me if I saw this at the airport on Monday. Seriously, I am not surprised when I see something asinine at the airport.

Cheers,

My girlfriend's family had something similar happen several years ago. For some reason, her little brother, who was about 8 years old at the time, was "randomly selected" when they were coming back from Hawaii. Her mother went with him, and when she went to put her hand on his shoulder, the TSA Nazi barked, "Don't you touch him!"

One of our CAs, named John White, is on the no-fly because his name is "too common, and easily forged." Guy's #7 seniority in the company and he can hardly dead-head/non-rev anywhere without getting hassled.

I'm waiting for a parent to snap and beat the hell out of one of these retards. I would be making national news.

Pretty sure you'll see it if/when my fiance and I decide to have kids and the TSA decides to pull this ****.

They arrested the kid for simply having a rubber band ball and wanting to get on the d* plane. Actually hitting one of them would prolly have you waking up in a cage in Gitmo.

Omigosh, these stories about kids and elderly people are awful. I can't believe they are so inflexible. What a nightmare! I fly a lot, but I've never seen anything like this. Gawd.

Good summary and rant:

I KNOW why they don't have real terrists name on the list. The list is too widely distributed so they don't want the real bad guys to know they're under surveillance. That was on the 60 minutes story. Another SNAFU you couldn't make up.

But read the post under that one, to get another TSA story that should make us angry enough to...(rest deleted in hopes I'm not on the list yet).

He's not on the "no-fly" list, or he'd never fly. He's on the other list which calls for additional scrutiny.

I have an acquaintance who has a double, but non-hyphenated, last name. Both he and his wife adopted both their names as their last name. He ended up on the no-fly list just for that. Who know why.
