Report on trip to Mexico

Just returned from our trip to Mexico, what a great time!! There were 9 of us in 4 aircraft that flew from LRU to Guaymas, cleared customs etc., then flew 85 miles across the Sea of Cortez to the Hotel Serenidad. It is a nice place with a dirt runway on the property. Sure is cool to park the plane, dig out your luggage and check into the hotel. The next morning we flew across the peninsula to a dirt strip at Laguna San Ignacio for our whale watching/petting trip. What a blast!! Flew back to the hotel for the Saturday pig roast, good food and friendly people. Made for a terrific trip. The whales are unbelievable!
The mothers come into the lagoon to calf and stay there until the young are able to make the trip back up north. They are amazingly tame, the come right up to the boats, roll over and look at you, lay up against the boat and let you pet them. It is pretty cool to get that close to something that big. I highly recommend this trip to anyone. Flying into mexico is no big deal and is actually easier than the return to the US. Customs at Guaymas was fairly well organized and we cruised right through despite the 15 or so aircraft that had all landed within the hour. Here are a couple of pictures, they are large so beware.

Thanks for sharing these with us. Great pics and looks like a great flying vacation.

We're going to Cozumel in July. Would appreciate any tips.

Dave,
The Baja Bush Pilots website has tons of info on flying in Mexico. The only thing they say (that according to the FSS is wrong) is filing a flight plan with FSS before you leave for your return trip from Mexico. According to the Albuquerque FSS it is only a customs notification that you file and your flight plan back to the US is done by Mexico. It was all really painless and if you would like more specific info let me know. Baja Bush Pilots website is http://www.bajabushpilots.com/ I am sure you will have a great time! It was a little weird landing at Serenidad being met by the Mexican Army complete with automatic weapons, but they were friendly and just doing their job making sure all was in order.
