Torn Calf

Let's say a PP has a minor muscle tear in one calf. Recommended treatment is several weeks' rest and PT. He's ambulatory with some pain, and can drive fine. Can the pilot determine on his own whether to self ground, or does he need explicit doctor's clearance before flying? Assume all will be properly disclosed at his next medical.

I would keep that to yourself. No need to involve AME or FAA.

I would think that's a "I didn't fly when it, I started flying again when it stopped hurting" type thing.

I did that about 2 years ago, holy heck that hurt. I don't recall whether I flew with the condition or not but since I didn't see a doc it never occurred to me to report it. Your PP will know whether he can safely operate the rudder pedals.
