In 1917... An American-built DH-4 flies for the 1st time.

In 1980... Demonstration flight of a secretly modified C-130 for an Iran hostage crisis rescue attempt ends in crash landing at Eglin Air Force Base's Duke Field, Florida leading to cancellation of Operation Credible Sport.

In 1998... Space Shuttle Discovery blasts off on STS-95 with 77-year old John Glenn on board, making him the oldest person to go into space. He became the first American to orbit Earth on February 20, 1962.

In 1998... While en route from Adana to Ankara, a Turkish Airlines flight with a crew of 6 and 33 passengers is hijacked by a Kurdish militant who orders the pilot to fly to Switzerland. The plane instead lands in Ankara after the pilot tricked the hijacker into thinking that he was landing in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia to refuel.

In 2005... Ghana International Airlines launched with inaugural flight from Accra to London.

In 1914... Aviators in Melbourne form an Australian Aero Club.

In 1816... Oswald Boelcke, German pilot, dies (b. 1891). Boelcke was a WWI fighter ace and is considered the father of the German fighter Airforce.

In 1952... The Douglas A3D (A-3) Skywarrior makes its first flight.

In 1957... The first production Boeing Model 707-120 jet rolls out.

In 1972... The first Airbus A300 flies.

In 1998... An Air China (Mainland China) jetliner is hijacked by disgruntled pilot Yuan Bin and flown to Taiwan.

In 1908... Henry Farman performs the 1st cross-country flight in Europe as well as the 1st flight between two towns.

In 1909... Claude Moore-Brabazon wins a £1,000 prize offered by the Daily Mail for a circular flight of one mile.

In 1935... The Boeing Model 299 (B-17 Prototype), with a military pilot at the helm, crashes at Wright Field in Dayton. Les Tower, an observer on the flight, dies from burns, and the $432,034 airplane is destroyed.

In 1930... Michael Collins, American astronaut, was born. Collins was selected as part of the third group of fourteen astronauts in 1963, he flew in space twice. His first spaceflight was Gemini 10, when he and command pilot John W. Young performed two rendezvous with different spacecraft and Collins undertook two EVAs. His second spaceflight was Apollo 11 where he served as the command module pilot.

In 1933... France’s air minister Pierre Cot formally inaugurates the country’s national airline, Air France.

In 1943... F4U Corsair accomplishes the first successful radar guided interception.

In 1956... The US Navy R4D-5 Skytrain Que Sera Sera, commanded by Rear Admiral George Dufek, becomes the 1st airplane to make a landing at the South Pole.

In 1994... An American Eagle ATR-72 crashes in Roselawn, Indiana, after circling in icy weather, killing 68 passengers and crew.

In 1996... A Brazilian TAM Fokker F100 crashes into several houses in São Paulo, Brazil killing 98 including 2 on the ground.

In 1999... EgyptAir Flight 990 traveling from New York City to Cairo crashes off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, killing all 217 on-board.

In 2000... A Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 operating as Flight 006 collides with construction equipment upon takeoff in Taipei, Taiwan killing 79 passengers and 4 crew members.

In 2000... A chartered Antonov An-26 explodes after takeoff in Northern Angola killing 50.

In 2004... Passenger airline service ends at Mirabel International Airport in Montreal, Canada.
