For those following the HBO series the Pacific, I thought you might find this collection in the library at Auburn interesting. It is about Eugene Sledge, who after the war became a professor at Auburn

Also the character that is with Eugene as a sort of dark character, who has drifted into the apathy and sometime mentor of Sledge, Merriel 'SNAFU' Shelton, is a real person. There is not much written about him after Sledge's book. But I did find this article about him.

and a picture of him and Sledge from 1983

Sledge mentioned his "buddy" SNAFU in the Discovery Channel 2-part series Hell in the Pacific. Thanks for posting that Scott.

The guy who plays Snafu was Ahmen-Rah in Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller. Weird seeing him as a boy Pharoh one night and creepy ol' Snafu the next.

Any relation to Sister Sledge?

And I didn't realize until last episode the the actor portraying Sledge was the kid in Jurassic Park.
