I watched my son and his instructor fly around the pattern the other day in my airplane and then the mic stuck. Always wondered what they talk about up there. At first I heard both of then, but after the student made a traffic call it was all instructor. After a few trips around the pattern the instructor got out and I reached in and pulled his PTT out (velcro one from ASA I think), checked the radio and gave the student thumbs up. The student flew for another hour without issue.
Anyway, I found a short in the right-seat PTT plug between the white wire and the shield wire. But I pulled the switch end apart and only the red and shield wires are connected to the switch; the white wire isn't connected at all.
I haven't pulled the pilot's side apart yet. Do these fail often? What is the cause?
