I am a dad!
I'm in St Louis from today until the end of August if anyone happens to be in the area. I'm fairly limited, transportation wise, to the range of the grumpy hotel van driver, but I'm only about 5 mins from KSTL, so I'd be happy to meet up for lunch or diner after class.

Darn, I was just down at SUS on Wednesday. I should be back before the end of August, STL is the closest to you?

That's too bad! My checkride is the 19th, so if you're back in town before that, let me know. Our hotel is probably about five miles from KSTL...I have no idea what else is around here for airports...it took me a couple of days just to figure out where we are relative to STL and downtown .

is STL VFR friendly?

It doesn't look too bad from the ground under the pattern. It looks to be about on par with Albany or Wichita in terms of ops tempo, and there are at least a couple FBOs on field, one of which is right next door to Flight Safety.

There's Creve Coeur off to the west a bit with plenty of restaurants and junk in between. Heck, it's probably non-stop everything by these days.

St. Louis Downtown in Cahokia is a nice little airport, very well kept. But, there's no dang easy or fast way to get in and out of there from the ground.

The train system was being expanded at a pretty good pace last I was there. It should get ya around fairly well between STL, downtown, West End and other places between those and the airport.

Enjoy your time while up there. I was born and raised in that city, watching the Arch pop up from my backyard in north St. Louis.

The two FBOs are Signature and ATS (Airline Terminal Services). Signature is a typical Signature, small, but a nice facility with typical Signature pricing. ATS is OK, but for whatever reason is more closely guarded by "security". They even search all cars, after which someone needs to come from the FBO to escort you. I think that is because it is next to the Boeing F-18 facility but I am just speculating.

The two other airports I've been to are Spirit of St Louis (KSUS), where I was based for a few years, and St Louis Downtown (KCPS). Spirit is a nice reliever airport but not particularly close to downtown. St Louis Downtown is actually across the river in Illinois. It is closer to downtown, but as Kenny says, there is no easy way to get there, plus it it not located in the nicest neighborhood if you have to stay there. I've been to the FBO, Ideal, where the people were very friendly and helpful.

I didn't know you were from here Ken! Know of any good BBQ joints in Earth City or a 10 mile radius there-of (we're at the mercy of the hotel van drivers)?

I think I heard that there is a light rail system that runs from the downtown/arch area out to west STL where we are, do you know anything about that?

Yep, I was born at the old Missouri Baptist Hospital when it was still in North St. Louis. It's now located in West County.

Gosh, no luck on restaurants and such... Sorry, I've not spent a lot of time there the last several years. The city has changed a LOT during my absence. The replaced the stadium and still name it for Augie Busch. That seems unnatural to me.

You might check the web site for bi-state transit and find out more on the trails there. I'm close to only one friend there and he's not a pilot. I can't even get him to go for a ride with me when I'm up there. But, he'll fly on Qantas to down under. Go figure! I've never had a blow out in the side of a Skyhawk. :D

As far as BBQ places, whatever web site for an "underground" newspaper you fan find usually has great lists for those places. I can't recall its name up there. If ya had ham radio, I'd direct ya to a couple repeaters where those folks are a wealth of great information.

If ya want, PM me and Ill give ya Bob's number and you can bug him. You can tell him it's my payback for never flying with me. Then, he'll probably complain I didn't show for his party in May. :)
