Interesting new development...
In Alaska there is a new program that officially uses SPOT and Spidertracks as part of the FAA Search and Rescue program. The program, called eSRS (enhanced Special Reporting System), utilizes the real-time tracking feature of these products, and will initiate a search if it looks like the target stops moving somewhere other than where it is supposed to be stopping. The program has been tested for the last two years (successfully), and is now an official option for VFR flyers.

(edit- no April fooling here!)

Henning will love that.

the sailplane community has been using SPOT and similar gps tracking for several years for following along with glider contests as well as tracking XC flights. Leah really likes being able to find me when I land in timbuktu and I like being found.

It should make it easier for the UAV's to find you as well.

'Read the stuff... seems like a well-thought-out program... especially for the FAA.
