Just asking. how are these spammer guys getting through the registration process? They were being stopped for a while but it looks like someone has figured out a work around to get in.

If I told you, I'd have to kill you.

Seriously, we're looking at ways of stopping this latest breed.

We have human checks. Humans can be hired for cheap in the world.

um, what spammers?

um, what spammers?
There have a been a couple of guys or maybe the same guy, who has been sending out viagra spam on PoA. A couple of weeks ago he started sending it to people's PM accounts. Today at a rate of about 1 per minute he was adding his link to each and every active thread.

Interesting! I've not seen any of them. I wonder if the satellite service is more resistent to the bums. ??

Nope--you just don't look at the board every second like Scott.

I've been cleaning up after them when I have a free moment..and intend on fixing it..when I have another one.

I would like to extricate certain of their sensitive body parts with a very rusty knife. Then THEY wouldn't NEED the products they are hawking.

Could you banhammer all CN based IPs? Or are they coming through who knows what proxies?

What happens is on any given day there are hundreds of thousands of spam bots and hired humans posting hundred of millions of spam messages on various boards using an ever changing toolbox of techniques.

Here in a period over 2 or 3 months we have 1 or 2 of these that manage to get a user registered and post 4-6 messages which one or more of OUR human moderators typically detect, delete, and ban the user account and block the IP address manually in an average of 10 minutes during which time we get 4 different users making bad post reports and Scott complains.

Our apologies.

I started making bad post reports on this latest one, and then noticed that he was posting new messages faster than I could send bad post reports. So I called Jesse on the phone and he nuked 'em.

I noticed that for the guy last yesterday afternoon and basically did the same except I PM'ed Jesse and figured when he got a break form his real job he would deal with it.

Scott was not complaining about anything other than spammers and Scott is happy that PoA works so well at keeping them out, but Scott was wondering how the spammers are now able to get in after it had appeared that they were successfully being thwarted for so long. Call Scott curious if you like but not a complainer.

Wow, y'all are being pretty hard on Scott....I think he's trying to help, not make it harder on y'all.

It was a joke, ya'll. Read it in terms of this:

Student pilot to irate instructor: "Think about it. I navigated through a boiling fluid swirling around a rotating sphere that is hurtling around a fusion reaction source at thousands of miles per hour. This system is moving in a circular motion around a black hole at who knows what speed, while the space it takes up is expanding. And I bounced 6 inches. 6 MEASLY INCHES! You need to get off my back, man"

If I could just get youse guys into my demented brain.

I'll see if I can get tickets for that tour!!:rofl::rofl:

FYI thanks for explaining. I really was worried youse guys was getting mad at me. I did not mean to imply I was complaining about how the board was being run in regards tot he spam invasion. I know from running several of my own newsgroups how much a PIA spammers can be. I was just looking for info on how they are thwarting the current set up.

Quite seriously, if any of y'all have anything to offer in the way of technical advice on how to bury this maggot (and all his cousins), please feel free to post it. If Jesse, Bill, or the rest of our technical team haven't thought of it already, I'm sure they'll take it under advisement.

Folks, I made a couple of changes tonight to try and slow this guy down. The only one that will affect the legit users of the board is that I changed the minimum time between posts from 15 seconds to 30 seconds.

That means you may have to wait a bit longer if you post a lot, and post quickly. Sorry for the inconvenience - we may change it back if the other measures are successful.

I KNEW Scott would be the one impacted by that!:rofl::rofl:

I just made a change that might help. If it doesn't--I might just write something really tricky into the registration forum, open source it, and start a sourceforge project. It isn't rocket science stopping these idiots..just takes effort.

The spammers must be getting better at decyphering captchas these days. I had to enter one on google groups the other day to send an email. It took me 5 tries to successfully decode the @$@#$ thing!

Many captcha algorithms have been cracked. Google's used to be hailed as the strongest. It still got broken.

They go so far as to hire humans to get past it, and better, offer free pron to web site visitors if you decipher one every once in a while.

Like you it often takes me 3 tries and I have to zoom the screen to figure it out. I had one yesterday that even had an alternate audio version I couldn't figure out. They make the audio clip incomprehensible, too.

Well, kudos to Jesse and the gang for doing such a good job. I had no idea how pernicious these mf'rs are.

Any chance you could bounce their message back through the tubes with a bomb on it or something??????:D
