That's cool. They did a good job at timing the balloon release.

Too early and the balloon would have popped by then. Too late and the shuttle trail would have been obscured by the atmosphere.

One of the chasers used to use a rented 182, long time ago. He'd find the balloon and circle it as it came plummeting down as a big "streamer".

The ground teams thought he took all the fun out of it.
