Touchdown! Greaser!
This one hit close to home:
I just found out that the mother of a buddy of mine died of her injuries from an RV-4 accident a few weeks ago.
The best I have been able to piece together is that on take-off, at about 50AGL, the canopy departed the aircraft. Her husband, the pilot, tried to get it back down on the remaining runway and apparently lost control.
I don't know anything about the RV-4 canopy: latches, detents, slide-rails, headroom clearances, or anything else. Is there the possibility that controls or leading edges on the tail could have been damaged?
I don't really know what to say or add to this situation, other than to take another long look at the pictures of my family on my desk.
