If he turned 90° so he was on a knife edge, how much altitude would he lose since he's no longer creating some lift?

That sure is not a big hole to squeeze in. Not much margin for error.
During his first (failed) attempt, I was thinking "you're slow, you're slow, don't stall it!"
I think flying is taking over my brain. I might have to seek medical attention. Or just grab the keys to the Cherokee and go fly.
