Cross Junction — A pilot escaped injury on Monday when he was forced to land his small single-engine plane on Lake Holiday.

John R. Parkhouse, 50, of Cross Junction, had taken off from Winchester Regional Airport, flying alone, and was circling the lake when the plane lost power, Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler said

Sweeney said he was fishing with his friend Bernie Cobb of Berryville when he saw Parkhouse’s plane. It was flying low and didn’t seem to be traveling very fast, he said, and appeared to have no power. “It just did not sound like the plane was running.”

County Fire Marshal Dennis D. Linaburg said the plane was in water about 85-90 feet deep. Fire officials said it did not appear to be leaking fuel.

A crowd gathered at the lake on Thursday afternoon as the diver and employees of the plane-recovery company pulled the aircraft out of the marina’s shallow waters using cable and a loader.

Bystanders posed for photos in front of the four-seat plane — it is white, with blue and gold stripes — after the recovery operation.

Other spectators joked that the aircraft was the biggest fish they had ever seen caught in Lake Holiday, which is in northwestern Frederick County about 17 miles northwest of Winchester Regional Airport — where Parkhouse’s fateful flight began on Monday
