Also I think it helps that I heard a certain blowhard, premature accident investigator has been banned form Stearman field.
it would be cool to live at an airpark. Unfortunately nobody else in my family agrees. Let's start an airpark timeshare company.
1K1. Great, only 9 hrs away. Merely a flesh wound. Although a person could fly commercial to Witchita. That would be slightly less lame than driving a Prius there, however.
I'm in for 1K1. It's 3.75h for me, but only 1h from my folks. Makes it easy for me to drop the family off too! $8MM for 50 of our closest friends! https://www.dailyherald.com/submitted/20220215/campbell-airport-in-grayslake-illinois-for-sale
I spoke to Zucker last week and he stated the lockdown was one contributing factor. I asked if he planned on having it again and he alluded to the fact that he is considering it. I have heard great things about the Wings FlyBQ
I was thinking you were in between. Wichita has been on my list for a while. It’d be awesome to have an event there.
Wichita is about 2.5 hours from me. @tonycondon is in Wichita, maybe he'd want to organize something. I like 1K1, and there's a lot in Wichita. However 1K1 is a busy field on a normal weekend day just as a normal matter of course. Something to consider.
I'm reasonably sure I saw one of the hangar homes a 1K1 on airbnb. Edit: Looks like they turned it into condo units on airbnb
The folks planning these fly-ins do a great job. There is always room for improvement, but folks need to step up. Also, not everyone is going to make every fly-in due to a multitude of reasons. Just keep planning and whoever shows up, shows up. For me, anything more than about 3 hrs for a Friday through Sunday fly-in is pushing it. I suspect others are in the same boat and would stick to more regional events, but Cie Le Vie, or some other French saying.
Why only a winter gulf coast fly-in? Summer is better for swimming. After all, it’s only a WET heat. There is private grass strip (2FL0) about 30 minutes north of the beach though and about 15-20 minutes drive time from ECP.
I always forget who the guy is on PoA that has a beach house down near myrtle or somewhere around there. it's a pretty big house. we should make it a regular PoA party house. yeah, that's what we should do...... on the regular, too!
It ebbs and flows. Like Ted, I've been around here for ~15ish years. Back 'in the day', when 6Y9 was still in single-digit ages and Gaston's was big enough that people were having to share cabins because they were all booked (heck, I think they even did a live Podcast from there one year), there was a LOT of flying going on. We had a few impromptu fly-ins in Ames while @tonycondon and I were there at ISU (who remembers "Pirates of America" and Irish nachos?), Wings seemed to be getting bigger each year (still disappointed we never made it up for that one and one of AZ's killer (almost literally, from what I hear) margaritas), 6Y9 was (and still is).. well... 6Y9 (#iykyk), Windwood seemed like a good up-and-comer. It seemed like there were PoA planned fly-ins in nearly every month of the year. Then after a few years, the initial PoA crowd activity started fizzling out - moved on to new stages of life (aka married with kids), relocated, changed jobs, sold planes, got out of flying completely, personality conflicts drove them out of PoA, etc. etc. So for a few years there didn't seem to be as much activity or drive to get events organized. I'm happy to see some new breath blowing in now to stir things back up. I miss seeing folks at fly-ins. We made some great friends and added several "I'll tell you when you're older.." type stories along the way. I hope we're able to get back into the flying game ourselves.
Looking for a reason to fly yesterday, so flew over to Rough River to get this: so now, I guess there's the $100 sharpie. Four of these guys in the pattern, and a couple planes. Looked like they were having a blast. Super calm and nice day....
6Y9 was (and still is).. well... 6Y9 (#iykyk), Windwood seemed like a good up-and-comer. It seemed like there were PoA planned fly-ins in nearly every month of the year. FWIW ---6Y9 is not limited to just PoA pilots/connections. Though it started out that way, and we are grateful for the early PoA support, we have pilots and non-pilots that know nothing about PoA. Some may find out about PoA after everyone mixes and mingles, but we have a varied group, and those that return year after year to support our efforts, have made a lot of nice friendships. So CJones-- when are you coming back?
I think 6Y9 has stood the test of time better than any of the other fly-ins from 'back then'. The community involvement that y'all have generated up there has a lot to do with that! We would LOVE to get back up there. I would love to get my boys up there. Unfortunately, we've stumbled into annual family Labor Day weekend trips with my parents and sister's family. We need to find a way to make it happen anyway!
I'm in. I told my kids I want to retire and live on an airport and they joined me in looking for such a place. We found a nice place just a few miles away from them in Kaufman County, TX. It's pretty much unaffordable, but I am still looking...
I’m here Ted I’m just a shy and reserved kind of guy so I don’t talk much. I’ve been trying to schedule Windwood but I don’t think Joe Beam owns it any more. The airport is still there but I think the restaurant and motel are now seasonal. I have a local who may flyin for me to see what he can see. Wings got cancelled 3 years in a row due to Wx and the airport FBO management has changed and it was just so much damn work. Frankly I liked it more when it was just my POA buds. The best flying are like 6Y9er and Rough River you go everyone chips in and you leave.
I’m not too far from rom Windwood. I went in there once about 15 years ago. Flew over last summer, wanted to stop in but we didn’t. I’ve always wanted to buy a lot up there. http://www.wv62.com/home.html
The little ones, or the large mouth bottle? If there was a 1K1 fly-in, I'd definitely fly up from 1K2 for that......if I have a plane.
