renewing n- number registration travails

Anyone tried to renew your registration on line? Apparently they send you a letter with a code, if you lose that letter you cannot renew online, I just called the FAA and they verified this. They can't just take the reg over the phone or give you a new number to register on line.

Not the end of the world to snail mail a form with a $5 check but, seriously? Is this the best they can do? At this point I don't know whether to laugh or cry when dealing with the federal government.

I did my last one online, wasn't the end of the world, but yeah if you loose the letter you're in for some BS.

The whole renewal system is dumb and should be tossed out like the garbage it is.

Don't wait.

On line renewal gets you a new registration in a couple weeks. By mail with the form takes months. And, your airplane is not "airworthy" for the period between the old registration expiring and the new one arriving.
