Another article that admits they actually have no idea. Who knows, could be either way.

Here we have a conundrum - If this is the case, and you posted this as the case, then is this not a truth?

Or should I go back to the whisky bottle and forgo logic? I always get confused here.

    There's a second plane that's uncompleted.
Perhaps it can be finished after this mess is over.

Isn't it also in a hangar in Ukraine?

    With the insurance proceeds?

With the Buran space shuttle no longer flying, the AN-225 is no longer needed as a shuttle transport. And as a straight up heavy lift cargo plane, It would lose many millions of dollars as the world has a very limited number of high- lift jobs available to bid on.

Buran flew once, 33 years ago. It was destroyed 19 years ago.

The AN-225 has been supporting itself in the commercial market for decades.

I read one article that they are going to repair it and make Russia pay for it. 3 Billion dollars and 5 year project. We’ll see if that ever happens.

I guess they'll do that after they win the war and Russia is part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republics.

to add, the plane sat in storage since 1994, but was restored in 2001 to address the need for the occasional large cargo need. They actually decided some time around 2005 to build the second one, but that kept getting pushed back.. 2008, 2009, etc.

I doubt the flyable one can be rebuilt, or that the half built one survived either..

Truly, pretty sad. But their AN-124s stay busy and clearly there's a need for a transport like this (even if just one) so I'm hopeful they'll rebuild. The good news it shares a lot in common with the AN-124, so it's not like it was a total "one off" design. If they build a new one they'll have a chance to modernize it. It was flying a lot, too bad the timing worked out that it was home when this all unfolded.

I heard that the "large cargo need" was preparation for the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012. :D

Seeing 5% of the aircraft and calling it intact might be optimistic.

Especially when the front half of the hangar has taken some pretty good damage it appears.

No worries. I'm not offended by it, or anything. I just found it amusing...the heartfelt and emotional speech by the host of the video, compared to the filth coming out of the guy recording the burned out vehicles. Not that it's a mystery as to why he's using such words....

If it was, it would be the first time anything in aviation was economically viable.

Wasn’t that the plane that brought our “captured” P-3 back from China, in 2001?
