A person has an instrument rating in one category of aircraft and is working on an instrument rating in another category of aircraft. The Instrument PTS has a table of tasks that are required for that additional category.

My question is this: Can a DPE require a pilot to demonstrate items that are in tasks not required by that table? Or is the whole PTS fair game?

Greg,

The whole PTS (for the cat/class) is game but I haven't heard of a DPE going beyond the required tasks.

In the front of the Instrument Rating PTS under INTRODUCTION, you will see USE OF THE PRACTICAL TEST STANDARDS BOOK, the second paragraph says, "The FAA requires that all practical tests be conducted in accordance with the appropriate practical test standards and the policies set forth in the INTRODUCTION."

Then you will see under PRACTICAL TEST STANDARDS DESCRIPTION, "The applicant who holds an airplane, helicopter, or powered lift instrument rating will not have to take the entire test when applying for an added rating. The TASKS required for each additional instrument rating are shown in the Rating Task Table."
