Sheesh... she's gettin' that nice quilt all wet !

My guess is an American impressionist. The lady in the canoe looks like something of the Hudson Valley artists at the turn of the 19th century.

Guess the artist Nice pretty pictures just for you Brian :)

Sorry, not Brian, but...

I'm absolutely horrid at remembering artist's names, i just know when i like something. I'm really into mathematical sculpture, but i don't remember those artist's names either! Oh well. I once TA'd an A-V section of classical cultures. I would have failed the course. I could read the story in greek, but remembering the Ludovosi Throne, well, ha. Not gonna happen.

I did like the fight over whether the one statue (with the missing arms) was Posoidon or Zeus

(hey, Brian, I need the symbol font. How am i supposed to write in Greek without it???):blowingkisses:

Gustave Corbet or.... Eduard Manet. Don't know about the oil and water, but it's the right period, correct style, and subject matter/setting. One of the early experimenters....there are a few others whose names would require Jansen's History of Art...

Very nice thread, Eamon. You gave it away, thanks to Google. I could not identify the artist from the paintings so I won't claim victory. Waterhouse.

(a) That's hardly the case, though the rumor has been circulated.

(b) I don't think so; but, over 27 years many theatrical/motion picture luminaries were summer customers at my camera store which was located across the street from Maine State Music Theatre.
Stockard Channing(Grease, television, and other venues;
Bob Elliot(1/2 of the famous Bob and Ray comedy team;
Mark Jacoby(played the lead role on Broadway's Phantom of the Opera longer than any actor);
David Canary(joined television's Bonanza for years after Pernell Roberts left the show);
and many others who mixed business w/pleasure up here in the summer sticks.

You got it Skip.

John Waterhouse.

The last one is my Fav...........................................

"The Awaking of Adonis" Painted about 1900 in England.

A little background info.

In Greek mythology, Adonis was born of Myrrha (daughter of Syrian king Theias) after she tricked her father into having impregnating her. Adonis was slated to die when the king found out the truth of what happened that night.

Charmed by his beauty, Aphrodite (goddess of fertility, love, and beauty) put the newborn infant Adonis in a box and hid him. Adonis later became an enthusiastic hunter, and was killed by a wild boar during the chase. Aphrodite pleaded for his life with Zeus (father god or god of all gods), who allowed Adonis to spend half of each year with her and half in the underworld.
The central idea of the myth is that of the death and resurrection of Adonis, which represent the decay of nature every winter and its revival in spring is aid to explain the reason for seasons and making Adonis the sprit of vegatation.

This picture is ment to show the mythical start of spring.

"Knew" should be changed to "know." Andy's 87 and still painting up a storm; will be due in from Pennsylvania in mid June. I had Easter dinner at Nicky's(Jamie's older brother) house(the old farm about dead-center in the below photo). Andy and Betsy's summer home is the house at water's edge.
I grew up just on this side of the cove.

The house in Christina's World I captured from the South side, but all those trees weren't there in 1949 when the painting was done.
