Alright I know lots of you have been itching to get to Ames to learn what real flying is all about :) Ive been pretty busy organizing the Region Seminar and Banquet, see previous thread in this Forum, but that is starting to wind down. So without further ado, here it goes.

Glider Rides will take place March 31st and April 1st. Should be a Saturday and Sunday. Matt and I will be flying Gliders. We are hoping to get Matts old IS28-B2 "Lark" down from Minnesota and also fly with the clubs Blanik. A great video of an instructional flight in the Blanik is available on www.pilotcast.com Kent did a wonderful job! We are hoping to arrange for an extra towplane, if interest is high enough to warrant it.

Social events in the evenings will happen, but I havent really thought too much about them. I suspect some sort of grilling or BBQ. I will try to organize for hangar space for those of you who will fly in, I cant make any guarantees though.

Anyone got any ideas for anything, please let me know. If you are going to come, reply to thread. The midwest flyin we had in October was a great hit and Im sure this will be at least just as fun.

Once again, mark your calendars, that will be March 31st and April 1st, Saturday and Sunday. See you in Ames!

I'd love to come, but I think that's the last two days of my daughter's spring break.

I'm pretty sure that given a choice between soaring/hanging around your airport and hitting the beach or pool in Florida she will opt for the south.

    nose gear collapses?? ;)

    Ahh!

Sounds fun. Right now i would be a maybe due to still having serious mom issues. Even if I can come I might be too grumpy complaining about the state of health care and doctors that should not be doctors anymore. I have had to show two so far why they were wrong about her care. See, I went and got started.

Sounds like fun and I would like to be there.

I should be around then, Tony. Let me know if I can help out. My "replacement" will start on Monday, so we should have enough hands-on-deck at work that I can sneak out for a day or two.........maybe. ;)

well it is on the weekend chris...Wingrunners will be needed. Probably not enough time to get you checked out as a towpilot. Also a grill master will be needed, i presume.

Yeah.. I need to get down to Indianola and finish that tailwheel checkout with Terry. *sigh* Would be a perfect chance for me to help ya'll out with that, though. DOH!

Anywho... I should be able to help out with grilling. This time, I'll bring both grills! ha! I'll be sure to practice up on the brats a bit so I can get the 'mass supply & demand' taken care of.

Sounds like a good idea! I cooked brats at "Pufferbilly Days" (carnival-like small town weekend festival) here in Boone last summer. Of course, we had one of those big pull-behind trailer type grills, so keeping up wasn't a problem. I did learn ONE thing, though -- I'm gonna bring a crock pot or similar to boil the brats in beer and onions, then grill to brown them, then back in a separate crock pot of beer & onions till serving. Should be better prepared than last time when I was trying to feed 20 people with one small grill. ha!

I'll also try to have the RV up for people wanting rides between glider flights. :)

Thanks Tony! Count me in for March, too.

For those who want to watch the video, a direct link to the episode info and pictures is here and the video file itself is here. If it doesn't play, you probably need to update QuickTime to the latest version (Free, http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/ ).

Good, you do remember what I told ya then.

The other thing with putting them in beer afterwards is that even if you do burn them, the black part will soften and come off after it sits in the beer for a bit.

Sweet! Count me in! :goofy:

Okay, I'm good. I've got the Seneca for the skiplane weekend (there is an awful cold lake hop involved...), 83F for the glide-a-thon, and 71G for Gaston's.

Bump. Once again, reply here if you are planning on attending.

To clarify, I cant guarantee good soaring weather. There may be thermals and there may not be. But we will be able to introduce you to silent flight and the magic that is involved with it. Hope to see you all there!

I am going to try to be there, will depend on my business.

I think I am to large for the gliders. BUT I could try to keep Kent and Chris from drinking all the BEER FOR THE BRATS.

    Sounds like a blast.

I may bring my twin 16yr old sons ,if that is OK?

He, speaking of overnighting, is there a recommended hotel and transportation available to said hotel? Have you already set up a block of group rate rooms?

no i havent done anything as far as hotels. Im willing to provide shuttle service. AFAIK I dont think any of the hotels in town will pick you up. Not 100% sure though.

I *think* the Gateway Center will do a shuttle, but of course it's not exactly the most "cost effective" hotel in town. There are 4 hotels within 1 mile of the airport, though. I'm thinking that maybe ONE of them would have decent rates.

The link to Gateway from airnav says they'll do a shuttle (for a fee). They seem to have a pretty good range of prices: 69-199. Cheapest I actually see, though, is $99. A little better than Comfort Suites at $117. Not nearly as good as Microtel at $55.

We'll all be doing dinner at Tony's dad's pizza place, right? So we won't be at the motel for long. The Microtel looks pretty good. Who else would be overnighting?

We could--but keep in mind that's a 90 nm flight.
