Pontoon failure... That's interesting. I've never heard of that.

When I got my SES add-on, the thing that struck me as extremely important was keeping the nose up on short final and be sure to touch down below the "max float speed." (I forget the proper term but it's the speed at which you would not have enough elevator authority to counteract the nose down movement from the contact with the water)

Not saying I would have had a different outcome, it's just a note. Good to hear he is ok.
 
Sounds like the pilot misjudged the landing and landed with the floats pointed down,no flare.
 
That water is very glassy, assuming it was that calm when the accident occurred. Glassy water landings without proper visual references can end up bad.
