Does anyone know how to register with the NWS AWC to submit PIREPs online? I came across an NBAA article stating that starting on April 12th pilots would be able to do online submission.

NBAA article: https://www.nbaa.org/ops/airspace/w...g-feeback-on-online-pirep-submission-form.php

AWC PIREP Page: https://www.aviationweather.gov/exp/pirep_submit/

However, when I found the page I couldn't find where to register for an access code. The only FAQ I could find stated I had to be a company rep/dispatcher and to email AWC support staff for clearance. Apparently, either the NWS is late rolling out the program or I am looking in the wrong place.

Any ideas?

I found a reddit post with a link to a server backdoor. Apparently you can gain access if you know the correct URL. However, it seems sketchy to use the backdoor as it gives you access via company impersonation. E.g. If you use Southwest Airline's code, your logged in as a SWA rep. Seems like a large security flaw in the NWS AWC website. If you wish to know the URL then you'll need to find it yourself as it would be sketchy for me to post how to gain access to a government website.

Regardless, refer to the above post for my main question.

Why would we want more PIREPs? Sheesh.

The map is just covered with them these days. So many you can't even read them all.

And the frequencies to call AFSS on in flight are so jammed they sound like ORD during a big push.

Everyone makes at least ten of them per flight.

This overload of PIREPs has got to stop!

;)

(Out of the hundreds of flights a day over this city, it's rare to see even three of them. And that's only if there's icing or unforecast moderate or greater turbulence.)

This idea of yours that people should be able to submit them easily on the Web is going to overload the system.

We could always charge per message like texting? Or you have to submit in person! That will solve our issues!

I do wish people would submit more PIREPs. The one or two a year I see over our area at our altitudes do help in planning. I think this and/or integration with Foreflight, Wing X, Garmin, etc... will help with the issue. Right now it's just more work for most people to get ahold of FSS. This might be a step in that direction as one iPad app already allows you to do this.

From that NBAA link...

The Aviation Weather Center (AWC) PIREP form will allow operators to enter their in-flight information directly into the system, which increases the number of PIREPs available to the NWS and FAA as well as the rest of the aviation community.
I read "operators" as meaning companies rather than individual pilots. How are most pilots going to enter PIREPS on line anyway since they are supposed to be timely? Most smaller airplanes do not have Wifi and cellular data is supposed to be verboten. I'm guessing they mean that when airlines receive some communication from their pilots they then file PIREPS online.

When they say "Email address ending in .gov or .mil" it tells me that they want reports from gummint sources, not us little folks.

Well darn, I love doing bleeding edge testing. However, do understand the reason for not wanting every Joe Blow entering stuff just yet.

I still have an .edu email, if that would help... Just Kidding...

I've been talking to some AWC meteorologists about this project for about a year. There was a time when the submission form was available to the public, but this quickly changed. Currently, only Part 121 and Part 135 operators have access to this. They have expanded the form for use in air traffic control towers, and FSS as a matter of fact does not take PIREPs from ATC anymore. (FSS continues to take PIREPs from pilots via the radio and phone.)
