Pilots – We Need Your Help!
Invitation to Participate in Flight Crew Workload & Situation Awareness Research
June 24th through July 12, 2013
7515 Colshire Drive, McLean, VA 22102

The MITRE Corporation’s Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) is soliciting the help of 20 pilots for a study to assess situation awareness and workload of flight crews during departure operations. Pilot participation and feedback is an essential component in our process of researching and developing a robust flight deck solution. The data collected during this study, as in all our research, is aggregated and de-identified prior to analysis and result reporting.

The study is expected to require a half day of participation (0800-1200 or 1230-1630) and will include introductory briefings, warm-up flying in the CAASD flight deck simulator, a block of data collection trials, and exit briefings. Pilot opinion data will be collected after each trial and again at the completion of the study. Participants will be paid $275 for participating and completing the study. Any transportation and lodging costs will be the responsibility of the pilot volunteer.

Participants must have previous experience as a pilot in FAR Part 121 or Part 135 operations. Both Captains and First Officers are eligible, although preference will be given to Captains. Pilots who have been furloughed within the past 12 months are eligible. A current medical certificate is not required, but participants must have flown as a crewmember in air carrier or on-demand charter operations within the last 12 months. Preference will be given to pilots who have not flown in a CAASD study within the previous 12 months.

If you would be interested in participating in this research please contact Suzette Porter at porters@mitre.org. If selected to participate, pilots will be scheduled for a morning or afternoon participant slot Monday through Friday of each week. If you have availability on more than one day please indicate your scheduling preferences in order.

Due to contractual limitations, MITRE is not allowed to provide compensation to current Government employees at any level, including Federal, State, or Local. This includes active duty military, reservists, and National Guardsmen – even when not on duty. If you fall into this category, we will unfortunately not be able to schedule you as a participant. Please ask if you have any questions about this restriction

Thank you for your interest and support in the advancement of aviation!
