May 1, 2007 - Hurricane Awareness Tour All Day the P3 Orion plane will be available for tours

Hurricane Awareness Tour to Begin with Participation of Most of Rhode Island Delegation: On April 30th, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Reps. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) and James Langevin (D-RI) have confirmed their participation in the kick-off of the NOAA Hurricane Awareness Tour. The annual tour starts at Quonset Point State (RI) Airport and will be led by the new NOAA National Hurricane Center Director Bill Proenza. NOAA hurricane experts will travel aboard a NOAA WP-3 Orion turboprop Hurricane Hunter in a five-day, five-city tour of the East Coast to raise public awareness of hurricanes that can threaten the Atlantic Seaboard.
After Rhode Island, stops will include: Cape May County (NJ) Airport, Martin State (MD) Airport, near Baltimore; Elizabeth City, NC Coast Guard Air Station; and Daytona Beach,

FL. Members have been invited to participate at each stop. The team of NOAA hurricane experts will be joined by emergency management officials, and representatives from non-profit organizations such as the American Red Cross and National Weather Service forecast offices.

The Hurricane Awareness Tour has been conducted for more than 25 years, alternating between the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, and is followed by NOAA’s hurricane hazard education campaign during national Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 20th-26th. The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st.
