When I click on "New Posts" on the menu across the top, I get "Showing results 1 to 15 of 15" but the little square that says "Welcome back Bobby" incidates 39 new posts???

The new posts lists shows threads, not posts. Threads contain posts, so a thread with 3 new posts would still only show up once on the list. 15 threads with 3 posts each would be 45 new posts.

I wondered if that might not be the source or the difference.

Hmm yes that is somewhat confusing. Unfortunately I think for me to change the text "New Posts" to something clearer like "Threads with New Posts", I would end up changing it everywhere...
