I found this after following a link from another thread:

Because I fly,
I laugh more than other men.
I look up and see more than they.
I know how clouds feel,
What it's like to have the blue in my lap,
To look down on Birds,
To feel freedom in a thing called the Stick..

Who but I
Can slice between God's billowed legs,
And feel them laugh and crash with his step?
Who else has seen the unclimbed peaks?
The rainbow's secrets?
The real reason birds sing?
Because I fly, I envy no man on earth.

Isn't that the kid who crashed while circling the whale bones?

I believe you're thinking of Loni Habersetzer (http://www.adn.com/western_alaska/story/429996.html). Brian Shul is an SR-71 pilot (https://galleryonepublishing.com/sleddriver/).

I still have Loni's page bookmarked (http://cubdriver749er.com); I had wanted to go up there and get some training from him, but it turns out you have to have your own SuperCub, he doesn't provide one. :)

Back to the thread, Kent, that's a great poem!

Sorry, I confused him with Shawn Lunt. Easy to see how, both names have an "a" and a "u"

You're right--Loni was WITH Shawn but wasn't the one who crashed. Thanks for correcting me on that--I've been under the misconception that Loni died.
