Here is a curious plane. Anyone know what it is?

Designed and built in Italy in the mid-1960's as the SIAI S.205R, briefly assembled and marketed in the U.S. as the Waco S-220 (photo below). Early models did not have that ugly third window. Those built for the European market had a 200-hp Lycoming IO-360; those sold under the "Waco" name (sacrilege!!) had a 220-hp Franklin.

There was also a fixed-gear version, the SIAI S.205, that was not imported to the U.S.

Wow, I looked up the tail number from the pic you posted, it was in TWO accidents.

On 12/1/1966, the nose gear drag link failed on touchdown at "Sky Harbor Muni" in Phoenix, AZ.

Then, on 1/21/1972, the prop hub failed, one blade separated, the engine vibrated partway off the mount and canted inside the cowl, jamming the nose gear. Pilot had to land off-airport gear up. :hairraise: All 4 aboard walked away, fortunately, but the plane is no more. :(
