Can I empty my laptop itunes "Music Library" and then repopulate it with the songs in my ipad? Without serious consequence or expense?

The laptop is an older hard drive (started using it when main HD crashed recently) and has only a partial collection of current songs. The ipad has a current collection.

I always seem to need to take everything into a separate folder, do a fresh install of iTunes, don't recall deauthorizing or not, and reassociate the device wiping it. So back up everything you want to a new folder on one computer.
