Facebook is now insisting I have two choices to continue with them, either I provide a textable cell phone number or I have to scan a photo ID for them.
That's it, bye FB.
The email below is bonafide, when I sign on to FB using a bookmarked link, it no longer remembers me and is asking for these things.

Hi,

You've been asked to help verify who you are because our security systems thought you might not be using your real name or might have more than one account on Facebook.

To access your account, please follow these steps if you haven't already done so:

1. Go to www.facebook.com and log in.
2. Follow Facebook’s quick steps to confirm who you are.

If you followed these steps and confirmed your identity successfully, but you still can't log in, please try to reset your password using the "Forgot your password?" link near the Login button. A new password will be sent to you at the email address associated with your Facebook account.

Additionally, you can find more login information through these resources:

- Security questions:

- Recovering your account through friends:

Is there more than one Dave Taylor on FB?

Never seen FB ask for more than an answer to a security question. They hit me with that when I log in overseas.

If they start asking for more than that then bye-bye. I've caught up with my old girlfriends and with that the site has outlived it's usefulness IMO. From a user perspective FB is nothing more than a free classmates.com. Going back to e-mail would be fine with me.

I dunno Dave. That sounds like a classic phishing email to me. Are you sure the links embedded in it go to Facebook?

Have you had any unusual FB activity recently? Logging in from multiple places? Or perhaps other people getting online with your open 2Wire Access Point? Perhaps you didn't log out and somebody tried to log in with your credentials?

I am just grasping at straws here. I don't use Facebook, and a quick Google doesn't show anything substantial about this...

Dave FB really cracks down on sex offenders. They go through the state registries and will look at logins to see if there is a match.

According to the Texas State Sex offender registry there are 6 David Taylors residing in Texas who are on the list. The message you are getting sounds as if they are trying to find out if you are one of them.

Wow. I just went over to Mashable to see if there was any news on Dave's problem, and saw that Match.com is about to do the same checking.

For Dave: Mashable is reporting that FB just rolled out some new security features. Maybe you're getting caught up in that?

I did also find that someone was able to use their home phone number instead of a cellphone #. They claimed FB called and left a voicemail with the security code necessary to log back in. It looks like they clicked the "If you are having issues or are unable to complete the confirmation process, you can report the problem here." on this page and reported that they didn't have a cellphone.

I did allow my FB account to be used by a vision-impaired family member several hundreds of miles away yesterday. It is much easier for them to see the fire photos this way. I don't see how that gives FB a bonafide need to see a copy of my driver's license, or have my phone number.

OMG, I am going to change my name tomorrow!

Bingo.

This is frustrating, but it's a case of "the grass is always greener." Say someone in, say, Kenya tried to break into your account using the "brute force" password cracking method. You wouldn't know about it, of course, but FB could tell that there was something amiss. So they have two options: one, they try to confirm you are who you say you are. Two, they do nothing, your password gets broken, someone hacks your account and then all of your friends, family, and co-workers are treated to an endless stream of Viagra ads from Dave Taylor. In the second scenario, you might be writing a message here on POA saying something like, "I can't believe FB didn't do more to protect my identity or confirm I was really the one spamming my friends with dick-stiffener ads." Or, they match your FB profile with a stolen credit card from someone else... and all of a sudden, Dave Taylor's FB profile is purchasing stuff via FB with a stolen credit card.
I don't think that FB cares what your cell number is, per se. But they do have an interest in protecting your identity.

Hmmm....I can't really picture any bad things coming from giving a company information to verify my identity. Remember, Facebook is intended to connect real friends with real friends, unlike MySpace, where it was intended to connect online acquaintences together.

Its not a forum (like PoA) where anonymity and pseudonyms are accepted and often encouraged.

It's how they are verifying my ID. I have perhaps 50 different websites all needing to know that it's me. Really me. Everything from distributors at work, to banks, to government agencies. Not one of them are this invasive; they are able to verify it's me without my cell phone number.

What are your security settings? Do you have your machine so locked down that facebook doesnt have the ability to set cookies?

Now.. why couldn't you have had that vision impaired member just use their own (or make their own) facebook account and get friended.... if they can see well enough to use your account they can use their own.

They were able to see the pics but it was not easy. To get their own account would have involved a lot more button pushing and time. It wouldn't have happened.

Frankly, they also despise FB. But they did want to see the pics that had been posted of our fire. The simple answer is; it was easiest way to the goal.

I suspect they are average. It does set cookies and usually remember me when I log in here.

My facebook account is an alias. Wonder if I'm next. If so, AMF.

Had I known that anonymity was encouraged here, I never would have used my real name.
Penelope and Odysseus (my mom and dad) will be so upset!
Truth is, even in a forum like this it's usually easy to patch together someone's identity after they've posted enough. It's a small world, and there is so much information available to anyone online.
So it's an interesting thing, where people seeking to represent themselves with their true identity are often misrepresented, and those seeking to not reveal themselves are often revealed.

SkyNet became self-aware yesterday too. Hang on, Ahhhnold is at the front door...

Oh nevermind. He said he'll be back.

Hey there Rip Van Winkle,

Today is April 20th, 2011, not August 30th, 1997. ;)

(Yes, I liked that movie enough that I went and rented it on August 29th, 1997. But it didn't "feel pretty ****in' real" to me. Phew!)

What the hell... Twitter let me down again?! LOL!

Sheesh. I really must check my Internet movie "news" more carefully!

And what, exactly, makes you think that SkyNet will actually let us *know* it's self-aware, huh?

According to the Sarah Connor Chronicles, the time-space continuum was disrupted and judgement day was delayed.
