Modalities only?

I noticed a note my orthopedist wrote on my prescription for physical therapy... "modalities only." What does that mean? I should have asked him last week, but I was more worried because he'd just mentioned "air cast," and I was afraid that was something that would have me hobbling around. It doesn't, of course, but as I'm getting ready for my first appointment with the S-M specialists otherwise known as physical therapists, I'm hoping this isn't something that involves leather....:D

My Physical Therapy guys take that to mean teaching you ways of doing necessary things only, NOT agressive ways to increase range of motion and load bearing. It says, "don't be pushing this joint".
