I thought it was interesting how they could tell he died between April and September, before 1954, but then couldn't narrow it down much closer than that.

The only two things they know is:

summer/winter (based on tooth enamel)
before 1954 (based on the absence of bomb nucleides)

Radiocarbon works well to say '100 or 1000 years ago', but doesn't do much to determine 1885 shipwreck vs. 1927 mafia hit.
