Lewiston High School principal Gus LeBlanc right, and school superintendent Leon Levesque talk to media outside the high school on Friday about three Junior ROTC students killed in plane crash on Thursday.
LEWISTON -- Lewiston High School Principal Gus LeBlanc said he believes three people involved in the fatal plane crash in Newry Thursday afternoon were LHS Air Force Junior R.O.T.C. students.

Students were at the Army National Guard Bog Brook training facility in nearby Gilead for the week, part of an annual end-of-school-year ROTC training at the camp. Going up in the air for an orientation flight was an optional part of training, LeBlanc said.

The identities of the students and the Cessna 172 pilot were expected to be released later Friday by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office. The plane went down around the mountains of Sunday River Ski Resort.

Counseling is available at the high school for students Friday until 3:30 and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“I’m deeply saddened by this. It appears we’ve lost three Lewiston High School students. It’s really kind of unspeakable at this time,” LeBlanc said.

Crap! An introductory flight no less.

3 full sized high school kids and the pilot in a 172? Also Pretty hot and humid that day. How close to the airport?

Not too far, though I've not flown into Bethel. It would be inappropriate to draw conclusions prior to the full investigation. As regards the pilot's reputation:

Nate Humphrey is a former airline pilot; his analyses of pilots(and candidates) is acute.
