Get a second opinion, I was told I have it, the next time I was examined the DR said no way, I had a cataract, I had the lens replaced and am fine now.

Depends on whether or not you make acuity standards....

Care to explain that further?

Last time I was at the eye doc, she gave me an Amsler Grid. It is a LITTLE wavy in the upper right quadrant with my right eye. Not sure how much or when I should worry about it.

What are you doing to be proactive in your vision care?

Nothing. That is why I ask the questions. I know Paul Harvey advertised a supplement that was supposed to at least delay the affects of Macular Degeneration, but I can't remember what it was and if it was really effective.

Does Paul Harvey's pitched product help with memory as well? :D just kidding - but I'm also interested. I've seen a few products pitched in shooting magazines, too, and always wondered how they stood up to their claims.

The retina specialists for both my Mother and Father-in-Law (both 96) recommends Retinavites. http://www.retinavites.com/
There are other similar products. The specialists say this will slow down the progress of macular degeneration. My Father-in-Law has the wet kind and gets the shots to stop the leakage, which helps too. My Mother has the dry type, and there seems to be nothing else they can do.
Sad to lose your vision.

What type of practicioner did you see ?
How did he/she arrive at this diagnosis ?
What prompted you seeing the doc, did you have any visual complaint ?
What is your best corrected vision ?

I went for my annual eye exam, I use an ophthalmologist, a registered MD, I have corrected 20/20 vision in my right eye and required a lens change from a year ago. In my left eye he diagnosed dry macular degeneration, and a lens change would not help. Last year I had a corrected to 20/20 in my left eye as well.

He has recommended OTC eye drops to keep my eyes moist, I-Caps with Luten and Omega oils vitamins, and sunglasses when outdoors in sunlight.

I am considering locating a Homeopathic practitioner for additional advice.

Rather than going that route, I would suggest a second opinion from a retina specialist.

And yes, if it's 'dry' AMD, the only thing that seems to help are the vitamins. And no, you dont want the 'wet' type.

Okay, so what is your acuity in the left eye, THIS year?

Just got my request for the report from my doctor. I don't know which field your are interested in so I will list most

VA 20/60 and 20/100 Best refraction shows 20/20 and 20/100

Pneumotononemerty 10/11

Pupils: No afferent pupilary defect

Visual Fields and Motility: Full and ortho.

Split Lamp Exam: +1 conjunctival endema: +1 to 2 dry eyes, and corneasa are clear. Anterior chambers are deep and quiet. Pupils are round. Lenses demonstrate +2 nuclear sclerosis, +2 vacuolar changes, and +1 contical changes

Funduscopic Exam: D/D ratio is 0.35 with intact neural rim 360. There are small punctate changes of the right macula. The left macula significant degeneration and heavy punctate drusen throughout. OCT's demonstrate some atrophy and loss of tissue, but no signs of exudation. There is some irregularity of the macula, but does not appear to be exudative in nature.

Impression
1 Vitreous floaters
2 Dry Macular Degeneration OS>OD
3 Dry eyes
4 Cataracts OU
5 Change in prescription OD

Disposition
1 Suggest OTC tears, prn comfort
2 Dispense manifest refraction to improve VA OD
3 Hold on change in Left eye
4 Give vitamins and Amsler Grid therapy for ARMD. Discussed AREDS study and vitamin therapy for decreased progressive rate of ARMD visual loss. Counseled to avoid Beta carotene products in smokers.
5 RTC in one year.

I do hope that is the information that you are looking for.

I'm going to assume the 20/100 is the left eye. Corrected, or uncorrected. Is this correct?

You will need to get a new physical and get deferrred to the FSDO for a monocular vision ride. This is about 0.3 in the air. The AME, if he knows what he's doing, will issue you a cert, "valid for student purposes only" so you can stay current with a CFI.

About six weeks later you will get an invitation to the FSDO for the ride. Then you end up with a "monocular vision wiaver, Whichever Class"...and that class is determined by the level of cert in the new exam.

I'm going to assume the 20/100 is the left eye. Corrected, or uncorrected. Is this correct?

It looks to me like it is 20/100 uncorrected or corrected. Not uncommon with AMD. The good news is the 20/20 corrected in the 'good' eye.

Yes, it is the left eye and it is uncorrected 20/100. I do appreciate your information. I can't thank you enough. what a relief, I thought for sure that my flying days were over. I do have a AME that is EXTREEEEEMLY KNOWLEDGEABLE, He asks all the questions and prods and pokes BEFORE anything goes on paper. He will work slack WHEN HE CAN, Keeping this ARMD under control / suppressed is enough to worry about.

Again, my deepest thanks.
