Long X/C in Europe in a Trinidad

I enjoy reading journals of other pilots' adventures; here's one that was just completed from the UK down to Greece, up to the Ukraine and back.

I found it interesting to see what it takes to accomplish a GA adventure like this in Europe, compared to what we deal with in the US.

Man, if you think OUR airspace can be tricky to learn, check out how varied the classes of airspace are in Europe... even amongst the European Union member states, there's no real conformity:

Airspace isn't really an issue when flying IFR because one gets a whole-route clearance.

For VFR, yes, it's a mess, sticking a load of charts together all over the floor with little bits of tape and working out a route which is outside controlled airspace. One then has to do a "Plan B" which is a more reasonable route but it relies on getting CAS transits, which one usually gets but not always.

I have never flown VFR in the USA (did the IR there) but the airspace there seems a lot easier, VFR to 18k feet...
