Yes it is Mark. But perhaps it like anything else. Better Weather, More folks flying, higher probability of accidents. No Matter what it always is like a bit of a sucker punch, catching you off guard and making you loose your breath for a bit.
FWIW I don't know of any othe group who strives for answers and seeks understading of accidents more than pilots. I don't see it in boaters, or professional drivers. Perhaps it just makes us feel better. Who cares if it makes us safer.
