Learning to fly 1953

Steve, nice find, thanks!

Anyone have more info on that "channel wing" airplane?

Neat! Wish it was only $500 dollars,.. but then again, I'm sure the amount is relative to today's economy and inflation. Cost me just about $5200, passing just at the 41 hr mark this year.

Sure are some nice planes taildraggers in there. Makes me want to get that endorsement this comming year ..

The Custer Channel Wing is one of my favorite "oddball" airplanes. I do know that the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum (MAAM) in Reading, PA has one of the last airframes that Custer used for his "channel wing" experiments/demos.

There is a little info out there on the web if you Google "Custer Channel Wing". Here are a few hits I've found informative:

I've read descriptions of the early design work where the tail of the prototype was tied to a post and the aircraft literally lifted off the ground with 0 forward motion.

I think it would be fun to fly. I've always admired the ability of some aircraft to take off with limited ground runs. Whether they are practical is another matter.

That was fun to watch. :) What was the 6-place Bonanza that they mentioned?

Oh. I wonder what that evolved into...a Baron?

I don't think so. I believe it evolved into the Queen Air then into the King Air, IIRC.

If I have the lineage right, the Travelair evolved into the Baron line.

I took lessons in 53, soloed 4-54 (16th birthday) PPL 55. As I remember the Aeronca Champ was $7.00 wet, the instructor $3.00 A Tri-Pacer went for $14.00. The minimum wage was 0.75. Scale that up to today's prices and flying was still expensive. I worked as a mechanics, helper, line boy, anything I could do to get some time.

Cheers:
