Landing light for a '78 Warrior

I use (and most other mechanics do, too) LED flashlights in the shop. The batteries last a long, long time and dropping the thing on the concrete floor does nothing to it at all. I don't know why anyone would buy an incandescent flashlight anymore, yet I still see lots of them on the display racks in the stores. Considering that the incandescent bulb loses at least 75% of the electrical energy as heat instead of useful light, it's time it was obsolete. I'm waiting for affordable LED household bulbs. Don't like those compact fluorescents at all.

I'm a EE, so I too am waiting for them to become affordable for the home.

Switch has an interesting product:

I saw some mass production LEDs for can lighting at Home Depot this week. Great for spot applications I hear. Definitely want for broad room-filling applications too. CFLs suck.

I spent $500 to put a Whelen Parmetheus LED landing light and taxi light in my 1974 Cessna 172. Original did it because I was tired of going out to fly at night, realizing the landing light was burned out, and then changing it in the dark. The landing light has a relatively narrow beam and the taxi light has a very wide beam. I think they produce a better light pattern than the 4509 bulbs they replaced. I was hesitant to spend the money at first, but it has turned out great and was worth the money.

I have LEDs in the fan in our bedroom, the were about 5x the cost of incandescent, and draw 2-3W to light up as bright as the 25w bulbs that were in there. Light is whiter too.
