Guys, I am a partner in a '79 Piper Dakota. I am doing my IR training in it. On the last couple flights this weekend, 1.6-1.8 tach hours, the DME has acted up. It works fine and is spot on with the 430W initially but after about 1-1.5 hours it quits working.
It changes freq and loses signal and if you turn the freq knob nothing happens or it jumps around but never works like it should. My CFII thinks it may be overheating. Cylcing the on/off does nothing to restore function. None of the other partners have seen this but I don't think they fly with the DME very much.

The DME is on the bottom of the panel with a KN170B on top and a 430W above that.

Anyone have any ideas? I don't like losing my DME in the middle of a VOR/DME approach.

Thanks,

Dan

does your panel have an avionics cooling fan? I agree with possible overheating.
