Anyone have any idea what IFR routing I could expect between Manassas and either of these airports on the west side of Boston? Is ZNY amenable to direct routing, or will I be stuck on airways? I'd probably file for 15,000' going up and something less (maybe 10K or so) coming back.

I know I'll end up over MRB on the departure from HEF to stay out of the IAD traffic.

Bill;
While I can not tell you about routing, I can warn you to avoid BEDFORD. They are a state run airport and charge for everything. On the other hand, OWD is user friendly. Last I knew, they didn't charge for passing by (which by the way, Bedford tried on me more than once!).
Bedford also requires prop locks while on the ground, escorts while on the field, and they screwed the EAA several years ago when the B17 was to visit necessitating an airport change.
Another alternative could be LWM; also user friendly and no airport fees.

yes. Definitely avoid KBED. Massport management is hostile to small aircraft.
The Massport workers are pretty good, but the massport bosses are clueless.

And, yes, I'm based at KBED, but it's 6 miles from home, and I work at the base
on the field

That's why I asked about OWD. Bedford is but a few miles from where my meeting is - and OWD is about as far as Logan.

CUrrent plan is to go to OWD, but I gotta look at BED, too, due to where I'm going and the timing thereof.

Bill, here are some actual routes recently assigned:

http://flightaware.com/analysis/route.rvt?origin=KHEF&destination=ZBW

You can pull that first route up on www.flyagogo.net with the following in the "Fly me to" box: KHEF-CSN-MRB-HGR-HZL-KBED

Troy, thanks. I'd already pulled that - the first two routes go out over the ocean, which I'd prefer not to do with piston single. The third is a possibility even though it goes to BED. I saw a couple the other day that routed over Pawling (which is better than the routing over Hazleton).

Was hoping that someone here had actually filed and got a routing in the not too distant past. If not, no big deal, I'll plan it and see what they give me.

What part of the ocean does that first route [KHEF-CSN-MRB-HGR-HZL-KBED] go over?

The stretch of 128/95 between OWD and BED can have significant congestion. I usually figure it's a 30 minute drive from my house to
the pilot shop at OWD. Even so, I'd much rather drive to OWD than Logan!

BTW, with KBED there is the night ops fine^D^D^D^Dsurcharge. No landings or take-offs before 7am.

Hmmm.. the first route I saw went EMI-ocean-Long Island, then up.... (the first route I saw is now showing as the second in the list. Odd, but probably a sorting thing). The first route I saw was the one for the PA46, which was WOOLY-AGARD-V44-SIE

I did see the one over HZL - if you look closer (and use the "plot over an aviation chart" feature), the route as-flown went up almost over Albany (De Lancey then Gardiner), then across (it was NOT direct from HZL). Link to route

If you want the rates, check here. And remember, the key phrase above is SURCHARGE. That's in addition to the other fees they'll try to get from you. The service is managed by a third party. In my case, it took repeated phone calls to get my $15 "passing" fee waived.
