Jean Batten was the first person to fly from England to New Zealand, in 1936.

When I was in Auckland's airport, I saw a map depicting her route.

I've contacted the Airport itself as well as the CAA. would anyone here have any other outlets they would know of to find historic maps like this (in case they can't help me, which I would hope they could).

Ms Markham made her east-west crossing on Sept 4-5, 1936.
Her book "West With the Night" is one of my favorites.

I also met Nancy Bird in New Zealand.

She wrote an autobiography called "My God, it's a woman!

story was she was the only pilot on duty (this is the 30s or so) when a rich "grazier" (large farmer/landowner) called her boss for a pilot to pick him up and take him somewhere (this is wayyyyyy out in the bush - not many options for getting around).

the boss handed the phone to her so that he could direct her to pick him up. She said hello and there was a horrified silence, then, "My God, it's a woman!"
