Friday night my wife took me to SAC air Force Museum "Night With Iwo Jima Vets" for our 20th wedding anniversary. There were 5 enlisted Marine Vets and one officer. All of them in their mid 80's. They were 17 & 18 when duty called and they attacked the beach at Iwo.

Good stories, really a great time listening to these heroes from our Greatest Generation who came home after winning the war in the Pacific and went to work building a country for me to live in.

One story that sticks out is one of the Marines was about to pull a pin on a grenade and he was hit in the back by a Jap bullet. The round went through him and hit a rock in front of him it ricocheted up and hit his buddy. His buddy said; "Damn it Fred! The least you could have done is slow the damn bullet down!" Both men went to the hospital ship and recovered while the flag was being raised on Mount Sirabotchi. For them the war was over.

It was incredable to spend an evening with such a fine group of men.
