Is your mechanic tall enough?

I'm surprised they would pull the gear (or whatever maintenance did) without verifying the gear pins.

Exactly. If I were the "engineer" charged with testing the hydraulics, I would personally check every pin before throwing any switches.

FWIW there are a whole bunch of things on a 787 that even a tall mechanic can't reach without a ladder. There are many considerations when designing an aircraft and I'm pretty sure that when creating the access to certain areas they would have an average mechanic scrunch down as far as he could, measure the distance between the top of his head and his foot then build it four inches shorter than that.
