IRS provides way to prepare and e-File taxes for free

I've used Tax Act online which is FREE unless you E-file. You can figure, print and mail your forms for nuttin.'

I see that now it's $15.95 to E-file both federal and state.

I just saw on the IRS site that they have a way to prepare and eFile for free... if you have an adjusted gross income of $50K or less. That doesn't help me (I used TurboTax), but thought it might help some to keep a little more flying dollars in their pocket:

I looked at it for MI - and they still charge 24.95 for the state piece. Given that the Deluxe version of TaxCut (includes the state piece) is only 29.95, and allows you to do as many returns as you like, I just ran my son's through my copy, and he only pay's to file.

I must admit, the filing fee seems a little steep - why should it cost MORE to electronically submit a return, rather than have some one manually remove it from the envelope, and key in all the data ? Another hidden tax :(

Troy,

Click on the "Start Now!" link, and you can use TurboTax for free, as long as you have the <$50K AGI. It's a little ways down the page.

I used to use the "Quicken Tax Freedom Project" site a few years ago when I was a starving student, but at that time I think your AGI had to be less than $20K. It's up now, sweet! Thanks for the link! :)
